March Gardening Tips

  • Winter water if needed - only water when it's above freezing
  • Deep root water trees - insert the deep root feeter at the end of the dripline (canopy) of your tree - do it on opposite sides so your tree gets two waterings.
  • Start seeds of cool season crops such as cabbages, cauliflower, spinach, lettuce, broccoli and Brussel sprouts indoors.
  • Prune fruit trees - it's best to prune them before they leaf out to prevent the spread of the disease fire blight.
  • Apply dormant oil to trees and shrubs infested with oystershell scale such as aspen, ash, willow and lilac. Apply when temperatures are 45 - 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Cut back ornamental grasses before new blades appear
  • Divide perennials
  • Heavy snows are possible in March, remove snow from plants to avoid damage and suffocation.
  • Core aerate your lawn
  • Start annual and vegetable seeds indoors; peas and sweet peas can be sown outdoors
  • Add mulch to your perennials beds
  • Prune non spring blooming trees and shrubs
